VirtualBox 3.0 beta brings gaming features

Exciting news from Chris Tomalty. VirtualBox 3.0 beta has been released and contains what many people prayed for from a long time: Microsoft Direct3D support.

Microsoft DirectX Logo

In 2 words, that means that highly graphical Windows applications will be able to run and display properly inside a virtual machine. One example ? Games.

Sure enough, you’ll need a Windows license anyway, but that would save you from dual booting and may be the last thing needed to strip the windows partition altogether from your hard-drive.

Even as exciting as it is, the feature is still experimental, so don’t expect it to work properly or at all for the moment. Still, I see a bright future, if they’ll be able to implement it properly. Also, despite me using the DirectX 10 logo in the picture above, the support is limited to Direct3D 8/9 for now. But I like to hope ;-) .

    I’m flattered :)

As much as it sucks *right now*, it has great potential.
