[Meme] Apps Guerrilla

love I’d like to launch a new meme. I don’t know if I have enough readers to start a successful meme, but I’m gonna try anyway.

I am looking to know which kind of desktop application people miss on the Linux desktop and which kind of application they think has been implemented too many times or is just not needed / counter-productive.

Here’s the meme:

Instructions:

  • Answer the following questions with less than 50 words each (mind, only desktop/gui applications):
    • 1. Which desktop manager do you use more often ?
    • 2. Which desktop application you would not like to see implemented again on Linux? And why?
    • 3. Which desktop application you definitely would like to see implemented on Linux? Describe it briefly or point out to a similar application.
    • 4. Write the name of  the last project (not the very best, the last!) that made you wish to thank their developers so you can thank them now! :-)
    • 5. (optional) Link the blogs of 1-3 people you’d like to take part to this meme. (no more than three). You can skip this question if you like.
  • Post your answers on your blog along with this instructions.

ps: note this is not Ubuntu limited. Feel free to invite your Fedora/Suse/Debian/etc friends :-)

So, here’s my answers :-)

  1. Gnome
  2. Msn clones. Please stop, we have enough.
  3. I’d like to see a Linux version of Automator (more here). It’s a nice application that watches on a folder (and more) and performs a predefined workflow when content changes.
  4. Gnome Do, thanks for Docky!
  5. Qense, Emgent, Peng

What’s next ?

If you did, you’re done. If you didn’t leave me a comment and tell me why !

I can’t wait to see the results :-)

This seems like a great time to subscribe my RSS !

    Stupid meme is stupid.

Gotta come up with something punchy and fun. This is just sort of haphazard and over-specific.

    3. IM client that does everything and even more than msn/yahoo/etc default win clients

    * I would like to see some sort of network monitoring GUI.
The key features would be the ability to view daily bandwidth usage (logs perhaps) and the ability to show active connections and on what ports.

As a webmaster, this I would find useful to track and monitor traffic to and from my server.

    * A working Hamachi GUI.
There’s a GUI for it already called Ghamachi, but it won’t work on Ubuntu 8.10 for some reason.
Hamachi is a very simple program, so a GUI for it would be rather simple as there’s not very many functions to implement.
